The new high-tech solution which joins other Pirelli high-end applications.

“Feeling” the road through the tire and communicating the information received via the 5G network. Pirelli demonstrated this process for the first time through two tests: the first on the track at Lainate, near Milan, and the second on the Lingotto rooftop track in Turin. During these simulations, jointly carried out by Pirelli, Ericsson, Audi, Tim, Vodafone, Italdesign and KTH, a car fitted within-tire sensors developed by Pirelli Cyber Tire was able to transmit information from the road surface to the driver and to nearby vehicles through the 5G network, giving advanced warning of the risk of hydroplaning.

The tire is the only point of direct contact between the vehicle and the road and, thanks to technology being developed by Pirelli, it can communicate with the driver and the vehicle itself. With the potential of 5G, it will be able to communicate with the entire road infrastructure. The Pirelli Cyber tire, fitted with an internal sensor, will in the near future provide the vehicle with data relative to the tire’s model, mileage, dynamic load and, for the first time, potentially dangerous road surface conditions, from the presence of water to poor grip. With this information, the car will be able to adapt its onboard and assisted driving systems, greatly improving safety, comfort and performance levels while also transmitting the same information to other vehicles and road infrastructure.

Thanks to the ultra-wide bandwidth and low latency of the new 5G mobile network, Pirelli will be inserting its sensor-fitted tire into a broader communications context, involving the entire road transport infrastructure and actively contributing to the development of solutions and services for future mobility and autonomous driving systems.

The “sensorization” of the tire is an integral part of Pirelli’s “Perfect Fit” strategy, which focuses on the development of “tailor-made” products and services to meet the needs of carmakers, fleets and motorists in general, always keeping an eye on the future and changes already taking place in mobility.

Pirelli has always been committed to the development of new technologies and producing tires with a high level of technological content. It has also been involved in motorsports for over 110 years, exposing its products to the extremes of competition and applying the knowledge gained from this experience to its road tires through innovative digital development models, new compounds and new applications. Pirelli has developed many different technologies over time, such as its PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) technology for the reduction of noise generated by the tires. This system improved the very idea of driving comfort and wellbeing, lowering the noise that reaches the car cabin that derives from friction against the road surface and tread design. Pirelli reduced the hum by covering the inner surface of the tire with a sponge made from an open-cell polyurethane foam. This absorbs vibrations reducing the noise level by two or three decibels, or about 25 per cent overall.

At the same time, Pirelli also offers complementary technologies like Run Flat, to enable continued driving for a number of miles in case of a puncture and Seal Inside, a self-sealing tire, which, as the name suggests, self-seals in the event of a puncture.
